DIY Clean Cake Mix with Vanilla Frosting

Celebrate with a back-to-basics recipe that skips the boxed mix and synthetic frosting for something cleaner, simpler, and just as sweet. This DIY cake and frosting combo is made with real ingredients you can feel good about — perfect for a naturally nourishing treat!

DIY Clean Cake Mix

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups organic all-purpose or whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup coconut sugar or maple sugar
  • 1 tbsp aluminum-free baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp organic vanilla bean powder (or add extract later)
  • Optional: ½ cup cacao powder (for chocolate version)

To bake:

  1. Mix dry ingredients.
  2. Add:
    • ¾ cup melted coconut oil or avocado oil
    • 1 cup milk of choice (dairy or non-dairy)
    • 2 eggs (or flax eggs)
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract (if not using powder above)
  3. Pour into a greased 8” pan. Bake at 350°F for 28–32 min. Cool before frosting.

Clean Vanilla Frosting

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup organic grass-fed butter (or vegan butter alternative)
  • 2 cups organic powdered sugar (or DIY from coconut sugar + arrowroot in blender)
  • 1–2 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. Beat softened butter until smooth.
  2. Slowly add powdered sugar.
  3. Add vanilla, milk, and salt. Beat until light & fluffy.

Optional swaps: Add cinnamon, cacao, or lemon zest for fun flavor twists!
